Who requires a visa for travelling to Sydney, Australia?
You won’t need a visa to visit Australia (including Sydney) if:
• You are a citizen of New Zealand — you can enter Australia without applying for a visa in advance, though you will be granted a Special Category visa on arrival.
• You are from a visa-waiver country (such as the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan, or most EU countries) — you must still apply online for an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) or eVisitor before travelling.
• Citizens of non-waiver countries must apply for a Visitor visa (subclass 600) or another relevant visa to enter Australia.
To confirm which visa you require, check the official website of the Australian Department of Home Affairs or contact the nearest Australian embassy or consulate: Australian Visa Information
Different types of visas:
• Electronic Travel Authority (ETA / subclass 601): For short visits (up to 3 months) for tourism, attending conferences, or business activities; must be applied for before travel.
• eVisitor visa (subclass 651): Free visa for eligible passport holders from the EU and certain other countries; valid for multiple short stays in 12 months.
• Visitor visa (subclass 600): For longer visits, tourism, family visits, or business purposes beyond what ETA/eVisitor covers.
• Temporary Activity visa (subclass 408): For specific short-term events or cultural activities.
